1 Timothy 6:20-21 "...Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in doing so have wandered away from the faith..."
Involving yourself in godless chatter will only drag you down and make you wander away from the faith. It will separate you from your relationship with God, which in turn will make you less godly. Becoming less godly would completely go against the goal of a christian, as we are called to become more like God. "Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly." 2 Timothy 2:16
Those who promote godless chatter, or false information, promote controversies rather than God's work. This is not only taking away from God, but you are taking away from those who benefit from the work done for God as well as your own self. We are commanded to love which comes from a pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith. We cannot have those aspects as long as we allow ourselves to indulge in false information and godless chatter. And as long as we are prevented those aspects to take precedence in our lives, we are disobeying the command to love. "nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work-which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm." 1 Timothy 1:4-7
People who give in to meaningless talk advocate controversies and they become ignorant. This same thing happened to Paul. He allowed himself to put too much precedence on the law rather than the truth and was ignorant because of it. He focused on meaningless talk rather than on what Jesus had said. He was a teacher of the law, but he did not know the truth. Until Jesus met him on the road to Damascus; by the grace of the Lord he was changed and made aware of his ignorance. "Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus." 1 Timothy 1:13&14
Turning away from godless chatter can be hard at times, especially when everyone is involved. But, in order not to become more ungodly and more separated from God, we must stand firm! We must be set apart in order to serve God more. God is with you and he will give you the strength to succeed.
"Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." 1 Chronicles 16:11
